Isrrael
Masculine · “one who strives with God”
Isrrael is Israel written by an ear rather than a dictionary. In Spanish the r in this name is strong — trilled, not tapped — and doubling the letter is the only way Spanish spelling has of showing that. Standard orthography does not permit the doubled r in this position, so the spelling is technically irregular and phonetically exact, which is a fair description of how most naming actually works.

The story of Isrrael
In the book of Genesis, Jacob wrestles through a night at the ford of the Jabbok and is given a second name at dawn. That name passed from the man to his descendants, then to a people, then to a land, and in the twentieth century to a modern state — one of very few names to make all four of those journeys. As a personal name it stayed in steady use among Spanish-speaking Catholic families, who have always drawn freely on the Hebrew scriptures, and it is those families who brought it into American records, sometimes with the extra r that tells a Spanish reader exactly how to say it.

one who strives with God
Genesis gives the name to Jacob after a night of wrestling and glosses it as striving with God and with men. Hebrew scholars read the first element two ways: as sarah, to struggle or contend, which gives the Genesis reading; or as sar, to rule, which would make it God rules. The text's own explanation is the older and the one nearly everyone means by the name.

Pronouncing Isrrael
ees-rrah-EL
In Spanish the stress lands on the last syllable and the r is rolled, which is what the doubled letter is there to signal. English speakers say IZ-ray-el, with the weight at the front and no trill at all. The two versions are far enough apart that a child will effectively answer to both.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Isrrael went to 5 boys in 2025, but Israel and Izrael are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 1,142, which makes it the 292nd most-given boys’ name of the year — 11,716 places above the chart.
About 1 boy in 1,496 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 341,615 for Isrrael itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Oliverio test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Isrrael's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Oliverio climbed just as high around 1945, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Oliverio's path sketches the road Isrrael is walking now.
Isrrael sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The underlying name is recognized on every continent and in three major religious traditions.
- It has a real short form in Spanish and another in English, so it is not a four-syllable burden.
- The doubled r tells any Spanish reader where the strength of the word goes, which the standard spelling leaves to guesswork.
- Every official form will normalize it to Israel, and the second r will be treated as a keystroke error rather than a choice.
- The name is shared with a modern country, so it is read against the news of the day in ways no family controls.
- Between the Spanish and English pronunciations there is no middle ground, and a child will learn to switch between them.
