The Book of Daniel is set in the sixth century BC and was written in the second. Its Aramaic, its Persian loanwords and its historical mistakes about Babylon all point one way, and its account of the years around 165 BC is suspiciously precise. It is a book about the present wearing the costume of the past.

Where it comes from

The story of Daniell

The dating argument is old and settled among scholars, and it does not diminish the book. Written during a persecution under a Seleucid king who had outlawed Jewish practice, it tells stories about earlier Jews who refused to comply under earlier kings and survived — the furnace, the lions' den — and then describes the current crisis in visionary language. That is a recognizable genre and it was written to be read by people who understood the code. As a modern name, the practical problem is smaller and immediate: one letter separates this spelling from the French feminine, and forms will get it wrong.

Meaning

God is my judge

Hebrew Daniyyel: din, to judge, with el, God. The doubled l at the end of this spelling is American; the French feminine Danielle has the same doubled l plus an e, which is why the two are constantly confused on paper.

About 1 boy in 211 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 341,615 for Daniell itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Hebrew meaning that is a complete sentence.
  • Three short forms, one of which serves either child.
  • Continuous use for more than two thousand years.
What to consider
  • Daniel is the standard spelling and the extra l will be dropped constantly.
  • It is one letter from the French feminine, which guarantees confusion on paperwork.
  • The very few girls given this spelling will be read as boys, and the reverse will happen too.
