Rome did not know what Caesar meant either. Suetonius lists four explanations and endorses none: a thick head of hair, grey eyes, an ancestor who killed an elephant, and a child cut from the womb. The most famous name in Roman history had four competing etymologies in Rome itself.

Where it comes from

The story of Cezar

Roman men had three names and they worked differently from ours. The first was personal and there were only about eighteen in use, so it carried almost no information. The second was the clan name, inherited and important. The third, the cognomen, started as a nickname for an individual and became hereditary within a branch of the clan — which is why so many Roman cognomina are unflattering descriptions that stuck to a whole family. Caesar was the cognomen of one branch of the Julii, and the man everyone knows was Gaius Julius Caesar: Gaius the person, Julius the clan, Caesar the branch. The z spelling records the sound in languages that voice an s between vowels.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No explanation of the cognomen Caesar has been established. The four ancient proposals — caesaries, a head of hair; caesius, grey-eyed; a Punic word for elephant; and caedere, to cut — are all recorded by Roman writers who could not decide. Cezar is the Romanian, Polish and Portuguese spelling.

Cezar sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2004, with 32 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Cezar went to 5 boys in 2025, but Cesar is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 829, which makes it the 366th most-given boys’ name of the year — 11,642 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 2,060 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 341,615 for Cezar itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables and five letters, with nothing hard for an English speaker.
  • The same spelling in Romanian and Polish.
  • It carries one of the best-known names in history without the English spelling.
What to consider
  • The first consonant is said three different ways depending on the reader's language.
  • Cesar and Caesar are both commoner in America and will be substituted.
  • The name has no established meaning, which the Romans already knew.
