Where it comes from

The story of Ignazio

Two men carried the name into wide use. Ignatius of Antioch, taken to Rome for execution around 108, wrote seven letters on the journey that are among the earliest Christian documents after the New Testament, and they are startling: he asks the Roman church not to intervene to save him. Ignatius of Loyola, a Basque soldier whose leg was shattered by a cannonball in 1521, spent his convalescence reading saints' lives, and went on to found the Society of Jesus in 1540, which within a century was running schools and missions from Paraguay to Japan. The fire etymology attached itself to the name because it suited both men, and it remains an invention. Ignazio is the Italian form and reached American records with Sicilian and southern Italian immigration.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Ignatius comes from the Roman family name Egnatius, generally taken to be Etruscan and of unknown meaning. The i-spelling and the association with Latin ignis, fire, are a later reinterpretation. Ignazio is the Italian form; the American peak is 1917.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Ignazio went to 6 boys in 2025, but Ignacio is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 304, which makes it the 640th most-given boys’ name of the year — 10,055 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 5,619 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 284,679 for Ignazio itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Iggy and Nacho are two lively short forms in two languages.
  • The two saints behind it are documented in detail.
  • It is a traditional Italian name rather than a revival.
What to consider
  • The gn and z are both mispronounced by English speakers.
  • The fire meaning circulated widely and is not supportable.
  • The 1917 peak dates its American use.
