Where it comes from

The story of Hollee

Holly is dioecious: individual plants are male or female, and only the female ones fruit, and only if a male is near enough for the bees to travel. Gardeners who buy a holly for its berries and get none have usually bought a male, and the nursery trade compounds the confusion by selling cultivars with names that contradict their sex. The leaves are another small surprise: the spines are a response to browsing, so the lower branches of a big holly are viciously prickly and the upper ones, out of a deer's reach, are smooth-edged. The tree is making a calculation about height.

Fashion outlook

Hollee sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The word is in everybody's vocabulary, so the name is never a puzzle.
  • It is short, quick to write and easy for a child to learn to spell.
  • The meaning is settled and easy to point at in a hedge.
What to consider
  • Holly is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected to it constantly.
  • The ending cannot be heard, so the spelling has to be given aloud every time.
  • The plant is strongly associated with one season, which comes up every December.
