Hetty is a Victorian familiar form that was written on certificates as a name in its own right, which is what makes it impossible to trace: it belongs to three different formal names at once and the registers almost never say which. Its most famous bearer was, for a time, the richest woman in the country.

How old is the name Hetty?

Hetty first appears in US birth records in 1882 — 143 years ago. The typical Hetty alive today was born around 1921, making them about 104 years old. About 200 people named Hetty are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Hetty most popular?

Hetty peaked in 1882, reaching #634 nationally. See the whole 1882 chart.

Where it comes from

Our story of Hetty

Hetty Green inherited a whaling and shipping fortune, multiplied it by lending money to cities during panics when nobody else would, and at her death was probably the wealthiest woman in America. She is remembered almost entirely for how she lived while doing it: one black dress worn until it wore out, rented rooms in New Jersey taken under other names so that New York could not tax her, cold oatmeal heated on a radiator, and hours spent arguing with a pharmacist over the price of a bottle. The newspapers called her the Witch of Wall Street and enjoyed her enormously. The judgment of her has softened since, partly because a woman operating alone in that market had every reason to be suspicious of everybody, and partly because her investment record was better than almost all of theirs.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Hetty served as the short form of Hester, of Henrietta and of Harriet, three names with entirely different origins. A great many bearers were registered with the short form alone, so the parent name is simply absent from the record, and with it any meaning.

Hetty sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1918, with 20 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Hetty sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, warm and immediately understood by anyone who hears it.
  • Every letter does what English expects, so it survives being heard once.
  • It has an old-fashioned solidity without being a name anyone else is using.
What to consider
  • Hettie and Hatty will both be written for it.
  • It reads as a nickname, which suits some working lives better than others.
  • There is no way to say what it means, because the name behind it went unrecorded.
