The story of Herlinda
Germanic naming built names from a fixed stock of martial and protective words in free combination, and women's names drew on the same stock as men's — shields, victory, battle, fame. Lind is the linden or lime tree, whose timber is light and cross-grained, so it resists splitting; shields were faced with it across northern Europe, and the word came to stand for the shield itself. Herlinda traveled south with the Visigoths into Spain, where it became an ordinary name, helped considerably by sounding like linda, pretty. The American figures peak in 1952 with Mexican-American families.
Meaning
Germanic "army shield"
From Old High German heri, an army, plus lind, the lime or linden tree and by extension a shield made from it. The lind element is among the most productive in Germanic women's names: Sieglinde, victory shield; Rosalind, horse shield; Gerlinde, spear shield. The modern association with Spanish linda, pretty, is a coincidence — the two words are unrelated, and the resemblance is why the -linda names flourished in Spanish-speaking countries.

Line the two peaks up, and Dimple's path sketches the road Herlinda is walking now.
Herlinda sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
