Where it comes from

Our story of Helon

Numbers opens with a census, and the census requires a named head for each tribe. Helon is the father of Eliab, the head of Zebulun, and that is the entire content of his existence: his name appears four times, always in the same construction, always to identify his son. He does nothing, says nothing and is not described. Scripture is full of these men, and their names are one of the reasons Protestant families in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries had such an enormous stock to draw on — anybody named in a genealogy was available, and the more obscure the better, since a name nobody else in the parish had was the point. A great many American names from that tradition belong to people the Bible mentions once to establish a parentage.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The biblical name is Hebrew and usually connected to a word for strength or for a rampart, without confidence. Helen's own meaning has never been established either. Two unrelated names, two blanks, and the record holds this spelling for children of both sexes.

Pronouncing Helon

HEE-lon

Two syllables with the stress at the front. Some families say HELL-un, which pulls the name toward the Greek one, and nothing on the page settles it.

Helon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1924, with 36 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Helon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Five letters with no silent ones make it simple to write and spell aloud.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
  • Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape English has.
What to consider
  • Helen, Hellon and Helon will all be confused with one another.
  • The first vowel has two readings, so the name is said two ways.
  • Neither of the two possible sources has an established meaning.
