Hayward
Masculine · “keeper of the hedges”
A hayward was a job, and for several hundred years it was one of the most necessary jobs in an English village. He walked the boundaries of the common fields, kept the cattle out of the growing grain, and answered for the hedges. The name is that office, worn by whoever held it until it stuck to a family and stopped meaning anything but them.

The story of Hayward
Manorial records from the twelfth century onward name the hayward alongside the reeve as an officer of the village, often elected by the tenants themselves rather than appointed by the lord. It was unglamorous, thankless work with real authority attached, and the men who did it were known by it until surnames hardened in the fourteenth century. Hayward and Heyward both survived, spread through England, crossed to America with the colonists, and have been used as first names here for as long as American birth records exist — which is the ordinary path for an occupational surname with a pleasant sound.
Meaning
keeper of the hedges
From Old English hege, a hedge or enclosure, and weard, a guardian or watchman — the same weard behind warden and steward. The hay in the modern spelling is a later accident of writing, not the crop; it was the hedge that had to be watched, because a broken hedge meant a ruined field.

The trade-off
- It says what it is: a documented English office with a plain job description attached, which gives a child something real to tell.
- Ward is a genuine short form that works from kindergarten through a working life.
- The spelling follows the sound, so it survives a phone call intact.
- It reads as a surname before it reads as a first name, and it is also a sizable California city, so introductions carry a small pause.
- The hay in it invites the obvious jokes, and a child will hear all of them by about the third grade.
- It carries the flavor of an older America, which is a virtue to some ears and a stiffness to others.
