Haydee
Feminine · “modest”
Haydee comes from a poem. Byron's Don Juan, published from 1819, gives its shipwrecked hero a Greek girl called Haidee who finds him on a beach; the episode was among the most admired parts of the poem, and the name entered European naming from it. It became particularly Spanish and Latin American, and its American peak is 1964.

The story of Haydee
Don Juan was the most widely read long poem of its century, and its Haidee episode — the shipwreck, the cave, the doomed love affair with the pirate's daughter — was reprinted, illustrated and imitated everywhere. The name spread through French and Spanish literary culture and became an ordinary given name in Spain, Cuba, Argentina and Mexico, where it is usually written Haydee with an accent. Alexandre Dumas used it again in The Count of Monte Cristo. American records show it with Spanish-speaking families through the twentieth century, peaking in 1964.

modest, revered
Byron is generally taken to have built the name from Greek aidoios, 'modest, reverent, worthy of respect', or from a related word for modesty. That derivation is plausible and not certain — Byron was a competent but not systematic Hellenist, and he may have taken the sound from a real Greek name he had heard. Modern Greek Haidee and Chaido exist and may be independent. The name's route into Spanish is documented; its etymology is inferred.

The Deon test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Haydee's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Deon climbed just as high around 1933, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Deon's path sketches the road Haydee is walking now.
Haydee sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It has a documented literary origin in one of the great poems of the nineteenth century.
- Dee is an easy short form that works in either language.
- It is distinctive in the United States without being unpronounceable.
- The h is silent in Spanish and sounded in English, producing two different names.
- The accent on the final e is lost in most American systems.
- Its curve is mid-century, which places a bearer's generation.
