Deon is one of several spellings of a very old Greek name, and its modern American history has a single obvious cause. A two-sport athlete spelled it with an i in the middle and was among the most visible people in the country for the better part of a decade, and every spelling of the name moved together in his wake, this one included. The name itself is far older: Dion is Greek, and it is built out of the name of Zeus.
How old is the name Deon?
Deon first appears in US birth records in 1913 — 112 years ago. The typical Deon alive today was born around 1966, making them about 59 years old. About 1,300 people named Deon are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Deon
The best-known ancient bearer was Dion of Syracuse, and his story is one of the strangest experiments in political history. He was a wealthy Syracusan, brother-in-law to the tyrant, and a student and friend of Plato, and he persuaded Plato to come to Sicily and turn the young ruler into a philosopher king. It went badly the first time. Plato came back and it went badly again. Dion was exiled, returned with an army, took the city, governed it, and was assassinated by a man he trusted. Plato's letters about the affair survive, and they are the closest thing philosophy has to a project report on its own worst idea. The name outlasted all of it and stayed in use in Greek and then in Christian Europe, where the longer forms built on the same root did most of the work and the short one persisted quietly underneath.
Meaning
of Zeus
The Greek name is formed from the god's name in a case that means belonging to or descended from, and it is the same element that begins Dionysius and stands behind Denis and Denise. As a bare name it is short, ancient and well attested. The American spellings with an e are phonetic rather than descended, so a child with this spelling carries the Greek name through an American respelling rather than directly, which is worth being accurate about.
How the name formed
- Dion in Greek, built from the name of Zeus
- Dionysius and Denis carrying the same root
- Dion in American use through the twentieth century
- Deon and Deion as phonetic respellings

DEE-on
Two syllables, stress on the first, though a substantial minority say dee-ON with the stress at the back and both are established. The i-spelling and the e-spelling are pronounced identically, so the difference between them exists only on paper.

Fashion outlook
Deon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, strong and completely unambiguous in speech, whichever stress a family prefers.
- It has a genuine ancient pedigree, which most names that peaked in the same decade do not.
- It sits comfortably on a small child and on an adult without adjustment.
- Three spellings are in wide circulation and yours will be converted into one of the others regularly.
- The stress pattern is genuinely unsettled, so introductions will involve a small correction.
- The spelling appears on the register for girls as well, in small numbers, and reads male to nearly everyone.
