Where it comes from

The story of Havanna

The Taíno of the Greater Antilles were the first people Columbus encountered in 1492, and Spanish took a large vocabulary from them almost immediately, which then passed into every European language: huracán from the name of a storm spirit, hamaca, barbacoa, canoa, tabaco, maíz, sabana, caimán, iguana, and caníbal, a variant of the name Carib. Within two generations the Taíno population had collapsed under disease and forced labor, and the language ceased to be spoken. The words remain among the most common in English. Havana became an American given name in the 2010s, and the Havanna spelling peaks in 2018.

Meaningnot established

From a Taíno place or chief's name, of uncertain sense

The Spanish settlement founded in 1519 was named San Cristóbal de La Habana; the second element is generally taken from a Taíno name, sometimes given as a chief called Habaguanex, but the derivation is not established and the Taíno language is imperfectly recorded. Havanna with a doubled n is an American respelling. No meaning can be claimed with confidence.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Havanna went to 14 girls in 2025, but Havana and Havannah are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 69, which makes it the 891st most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,600 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 23,294 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 114,805 for Havanna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
