Hassie
Feminine · “star”
Hassie is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 1,555 girls against 10 boys since 1880.
The two Jewish heroes of the book of Esther are named after Babylonian gods. Esther is almost certainly Ishtar; Mordecai is Marduk. A story about Jews surviving in a foreign empire gives its central pair the names of that empire's deities, and nobody has ever fully explained why.

The story of Hassie
The book is unusual in several ways: God is never mentioned, the setting is a Persian court, and both Jewish protagonists carry names that belong to the local pantheon. One reading is that these are court names, taken as a matter of survival, and that the text tells us Esther's Hebrew name precisely to make the point. English then did something of its own to the name: medieval and early modern English liked to add an h to the front of borrowed names, which is how Esther became Hester. Hester gave Hessie and Hassie, and those were ordinary American pet forms in the nineteenth century for both Hester and Harriet.

star — or, in the other reading, the goddess Ishtar
Esther is read either from Persian stara, a star, or from the Babylonian goddess Ishtar; the two may be connected. Her Hebrew name in the text is Hadassah, a myrtle. Hassie is an American pet form of Hester, which is Esther with an initial h added, and of Harriet.

The trade-off
- The names behind it are documented and one of them is a whole book of the Bible.
- Two syllables that everyone can say and spell after one hearing.
- It serves either child, and the older records show both.
- Very few people carry it now and almost all of them are old, so it reads as of another century.
- It is a pet form with two possible parents, and the parents are unrelated names.
- The few boys given this spelling will be read as girls on paper.
