The Harley family took its name from the Shropshire place and became prominent — Robert Harley, Earl of Oxford, was Queen Anne's chief minister and the founder of the collection that became part of the British Library. Harley Street in London took the family's name and became synonymous with private medicine. In America the word means something else: William Harley and the Davidson brothers built their first motorcycle in Milwaukee in 1903, and Harley has meant that ever since. As a girls' given name it rose in the 1990s, and Harli, Harlie and Harleigh followed, with Harli peaking in 1995.
