Where it comes from

The story of Halley

There are Halleys and Hawleys across England, and families took the names from the places. An English astronomer of the name calculated in 1705 that several recorded comets were one object on a seventy-six-year orbit, and predicted its return; when it came back as he had said, sixteen years after his death, the comet was named for him. Its use as a given name is recent and rose in the 1980s, when the comet last returned.

The second element is settled: Old English leah, a clearing. The first is read either as heg, hay, or as heall, a hall; both are attested in English place names and both produced the surname.

Halley sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1986, with 333 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Halley went to 43 girls in 2025, but Haley is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 357, which makes it the 625th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,892 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 4,502 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 37,378 for Halley itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented English place-name meaning drawn from a real landscape.
  • The comet association is genuinely good and easy to explain to a child.
  • Read correctly on sight by most English speakers.
What to consider
  • The comet's own pronunciation is argued about, which will follow the name.
  • Hallie, Haley and Halley are all in use and get confused constantly.
  • The comet returns roughly once in a lifetime, which is either charming or a lot to explain.
