Hazel is a genuinely useful tree and its wood shows up all over medieval English life — coppiced for hurdles, split for basket rims, cut for the forked rods that water-diviners used. English took the tree's name as a women's name in the nineteenth century, alongside Ivy, Olive and Rose. Haizlee keeps the sound, swaps the s for a z, and adds the ending American naming attaches to everything. The tree is still in there.
