The story of Hagen
Hagen murders Siegfried by a spring in the Nibelungenlied, having learned the one spot on his back where he can be wounded — one of the great treacheries in European literature, and Wagner set it. Hagen is also a city in Westphalia and a common German surname. It appears in American records in current use.
Meaning
enclosure, hedged place
From the Germanic hag, 'enclosure' or 'hedge', which gives the German Hagen and Hain and the English 'haw' in hawthorn. The Hague in the Netherlands is the same word. The element is ordinary and the reading undisputed.

The Johnmichael test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Hagen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Johnmichael climbed just as high around 1988, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Johnmichael's path sketches the road Hagen is walking now.

- Two clean syllables with no pronunciation risk.
- The literary Hagen is the villain of the story.
- The Hag clipping is unfortunate in English.
- It reads as specifically German.
