The story of Hagan
The Ó hÁgáin were a Tyrone family and the surname anglicized as Hagan and O'Hagan. Quite separately, Hagen von Tronje is the grim retainer of the Nibelungenlied who murders Siegfried at a spring and throws the Rhinegold into the river — one of the most consequential figures in German legend. American use of Hagan as a given name is recent and follows the Irish surname.

young, or enclosure
Irish Ó hÁgáin is built on a personal name generally read from óg, young. German Hagen is from a word for an enclosure or hedged place, the same element in English haw and hawthorn. The two are unrelated.

The Terrick test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Hagan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Terrick climbed just as high around 1981, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Terrick's path sketches the road Hagan is walking now.
Hagan sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
