The story of Gwenyth
Gwynedd was a kingdom before it was a county, and it was where Welsh independence held out longest — the last native prince of Wales ruled from there. The name Gwyneth appears as a girls' name in Wales in the nineteenth century, in the general revival of Welsh names, and traveled into English use in the twentieth. Gwenyth swaps the y and the e, which brings it closer to gwyn and further from Gwynedd, and it is one of several spellings in American circulation.
Meaningscholars disagree
of Gwynedd — or blessed, fair
Gwyneth is generally taken from Gwynedd, the north Welsh region, whose own name's derivation is disputed. It is also read as a form of gwyn, 'white, fair, blessed' — the same element in Gwendolyn and Gwyn — and Welsh gwynaeth means happiness or bliss. The three readings are entangled and none has been separated cleanly from the others.

Pronouncing Gwenyth
GWEN-ith
Two syllables, stress on the first, the th said as in think. Welsh gives the first vowel a slightly rounder sound than English does, and the Welsh Gwynedd ends in a dd, which is a voiced th — a different sound altogether.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gwenyth's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Shanel climbed just as high around 1983, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Shanel's path sketches the road Gwenyth is walking now.

The trade-off
- Gwen is a ready short form with a very long independent Welsh record.
- Two syllables that every English speaker says correctly at first sight.
- A genuine Welsh place and a genuine Welsh element behind it.
- Gwyneth is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected in writing.
- Gwyneth, Gwenyth, Gwenith and Gwynneth all circulate and none but the first is standard.
- Its meaning is genuinely entangled between a place and an adjective.
