The -ie on the end of a Scottish name is a Scottish habit, not an American one. Scots makes affectionate forms this way as a matter of grammar — a lassie, a wifie, a doggie — and it does it to nouns as freely as to names. What looks like an American softening is the language the name came from behaving normally.

Where it comes from

The story of Glennie

The best-known glen in Scotland is remembered for a breach of hospitality rather than for its geography. In sixteen ninety-two a company of soldiers was quartered on the MacDonalds there for a fortnight, ate at their tables, and then killed thirty-eight of them at dawn on the strength of orders from Edinburgh; more died in the snow getting away. What made it unforgivable in Highland terms was not the number but the method — guests turning on hosts violated a rule that everyone involved understood. It is still, three centuries later, the thing the name is known for.

Meaning

a narrow valley

From the Gaelic word English borrowed for a steep-sided valley, usually with water in it. The ending adds familiarity rather than sense, as diminutive endings do everywhere.

Glennie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1916, with 55 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Glennie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The ending follows a real Scots pattern rather than an invented one.
  • The meaning is concrete and transparent once pointed out.
  • Glen sits inside it as a short form that stands entirely alone.
What to consider
  • Most children with this spelling are girls, but a real minority are boys; either may be taken for the other.
  • Glenny and Glennye both appear and the spelling gets queried.
  • The generation that used it is now very old.
