Where it comes from

The story of Glenn

The most famous bearer did something no astronaut had done and then did it again in a way nobody expected. He was the first American to go round the earth rather than merely up and down, in a capsule so cramped he could not fully straighten his arms, with a heat shield that ground control believed might have come loose. He then left the program, went into politics, served in the Senate for four terms, and at seventy-seven talked his way onto a shuttle flight as a research subject on the effects of spaceflight on the elderly. Thirty-six years separated the two flights, which remains the longest gap between any person's trips to orbit.

Meaning

a narrow valley

From the Gaelic word for a steep-sided valley, usually with water in it. English borrowed the noun and also borrowed the surname of families who lived in one, and the two arrived separately.

Glenn sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1929, with 39 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Glenn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable, entirely unambiguous, and never spelled out twice.
  • The meaning is concrete and transparent to anyone.
  • It has stayed in steady use for well over a century without a fashion behind it.
What to consider
  • Glen with one n is equally standard and the spelling gets queried.
  • Its peak generation is now far enough back to date the name.
  • The record holds girls as well, and the girl is much the smaller side.
