Where it comes from

The story of Glendora

George Whitcomb founded the town at the foot of the San Gabriel mountains and needed a name for it; the story, recorded locally and repeated since, is that he combined the word for a wooded valley with the second half of his wife Leadora's name. That is a rare thing to be able to document. The given name appears in American records from the eighteen-eighties, which is the same decade, and whether it followed the town or arrived independently by the same route is not something the record settles. Both are plausible and both were happening.

Meaningscholars disagree

the valley, and a woman's name

The Californian town's name is documented as a coinage joining glen to part of a personal name. As a given name it may be that, or it may be Glen and Dora joined independently, which several families did.

Glendora sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1956, with 110 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Glendora sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves are familiar, so the name is read correctly at sight.
  • It carries three short forms with quite different characters.
  • Its origin is documented down to a town, a decade and a marriage.
What to consider
  • It is a place name to a good many Californians, which cuts both ways.
  • Glendora and Glendorah are both in the record and will be confused.
  • It reads clearly as a name of the turn of the twentieth century.
