The story of Giulio
The gens Iulia was an old patrician family of no great distinction until Julius Caesar, and his adopted heir made Caesar and Julius into imperial names for the next four hundred years. Christianity then supplied several popes and saints called Julius, which kept the name alive in Italy through the Middle Ages. Italian Giulio spells the Latin initial with gi, which in Italian is a single soft consonant, so the first i is not a vowel at all. The name reached United States records with Italian migration, and its best year on file is 1963, later than most Italian names of its kind.
Meaningscholars disagree
of the Julian clan
Latin Iulius is a gens name, and its own sense is not recovered. The Romans themselves derived it from Iulus, the son of Aeneas, whom the Julii claimed as ancestor, which is a family legend rather than an etymology. A connection to a word for downy-bearded, and thence youthful, is sometimes printed and is not secure. The name of the month is certain; the meaning of the name is not.

The Nathanel test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Giulio's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Nathanel climbed just as high around 1929, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Nathanel's path sketches the road Giulio is walking now.
