The story of Gionna
Gianna has been an ordinary Italian name for centuries, and Gianna Beretta Molla, an Italian paediatrician who died in 1962 after refusing a treatment that would have ended her pregnancy, was canonized in 2004, which raised the name in Catholic families. Its American rise came separately, with the general revival of Italian names since 2000. Gianna Bryant, the daughter of Kobe Bryant, was killed with her father in a helicopter crash on 26 January 2020; the coverage was enormous and continuous, and American birth records for Gianna and its spellings show a clear response that year. Gionna's peak in 2020 sits exactly there.
Meaning
God is gracious
From Italian Gianna, a short form of Giovanna, the feminine of Giovanni, from Latin Iohannes and Hebrew Yôḥānān — the divine name Yah and ḥānan, to be gracious. The reading is settled. Gionna is an American respelling with an o where Italian has an a, and it carries no separate history.

The Erina test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gionna's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Erina climbed just as high around 1972, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Erina's path sketches the road Gionna is walking now.
Gionna sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
