Gio
Masculine
Gio is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 1,572 boys against 43 girls since 1880.
Gio arrives the way Italian nicknames usually do — clipped off the front of something longer and left to stand on its own. Behind it sit Giovanni, Giorgio and Giuseppe, three of the most-used names in Italian history, and in Georgia the same two letters and one vowel do duty for Giorgi. Two syllables, open at both ends, easy to call across a yard.

The story of Gio
Italian has long trimmed its long names hard, and Gio is one of the oldest results of that habit — the front of Giovanni, Giorgio or Giuseppe, kept for family and everyday speech. Giovanni itself descends from the Hebrew Yochanan through Greek Ioannes and Latin Iohannes, the same line that gave English John, French Jean and Spanish Juan; Giorgio comes from a different root entirely, the Greek word for one who works the land. Georgian speakers arrived at the identical spelling independently, using Gio as the familiar form of Giorgi. In American records Gio has only recently begun appearing as a full given name in its own right rather than a nickname written down.
Meaningscholars disagree
depends on the longer name behind it: 'God is gracious' via Giovanni, 'farmer' via Giorgio
Gio is a short form, so its meaning is inherited rather than its own. Through Giovanni — the Italian form of John, from Hebrew Yochanan — it carries 'Yahweh is gracious'. Through Giorgio, the Italian George, it goes back to Greek georgos, 'earth-worker, farmer'. Giuseppe, from Hebrew Yosef, 'he will add', is a third route. Used on its own, Gio does not commit to any one of them.

JEE-oh
JEE-oh is the usual American reading. In Italian the same spelling is closer to JOH, a single syllable, and Georgian speakers say it much the same way — worth deciding which one you want before the birth announcement goes out.

The Kamarion test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gio's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kamarion climbed just as high around 2009, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kamarion's path sketches the road Gio is walking now.

The trade-off
- Two syllables, four letters, and no silent anything — most people can spell it after hearing it once.
- Sits behind Giovanni, Giorgio and Giuseppe, so a child can grow into a longer formal name later without changing anything.
- Reached the same spelling in two separate traditions, Italian and Georgian, which gives it real footing outside English.
- Works as a standalone given name or as a nickname, so it fits whichever way the family ends up using it.
- Two live pronunciations compete: JEE-oh in American English, JOH in Italian. Neither is wrong, but you will be correcting people in one direction or the other for years.
- People often hear it as an abbreviation and ask what it is short for. If Gio is the whole legal name, expect that question at every doctor's office and dentist.
- The letters also read as the 'geo-' of geography and geothermal, which surfaces in spelling autocorrect and in the occasional playground joke.
- Its wave in the US is very new, so most Gios are small children rather than adults — there is no long American track record to look at, only Italian and Georgian precedent.
