The story of Gerri
The Earl of Surrey wrote a sequence of sonnets in the fifteen-thirties to a young woman of the FitzGerald family whom he called the Fair Geraldine, and the name entered English from those poems — one of a very small number of English names with a datable literary birth. It stayed uncommon for centuries and became widely used in twentieth-century America. The short forms then multiplied and sorted themselves by spelling, with the doubled r and the -i ending both signaling a daughter without anyone having agreed to it.

Gerald joins the Germanic ger, a spear, with wald, rule. The FitzGeralds are literally the sons of Gerald — fitz is the Norman French for son, from Latin filius — and they were one of the great Anglo-Irish families. Geraldine turns that patronymic back into a woman's given name. So the meaning arrives at three removes: a Germanic compound, a family name built from it, and a poetic coinage built from the family name.
