The story of Geri
Surrey's sonnets to the Fair Geraldine were widely read and widely imitated, and the name passed from them into general use — one of very few English names with a datable literary birth and a named author. The FitzGeralds were an Anglo-Irish family whose own name means son of Gerald, so the poet was doing something simple: turning a patronymic into a woman's name. American use of the short form Geri belongs to the middle of the last century, and the choice between G and J in it decides nothing, since English says a soft g and a j identically.

Geraldine is built on Gerald, a Germanic compound of ger, a spear, and wald, rule — so the meaning arrives at one remove, through a surname, through a poem. Geri may also shorten Geraldine's cousin Geralyn, or Gerry from any Ger- name. The compound meaning is settled; whether it transfers to a clipping of a poetic coinage of a family name is the sort of question that has no clean answer.
