Geremy looks like a liberty taken with Jeremy, and it is — but the liberty follows a rule English already keeps. G before e says j, as it does in gem, gentle and general. So the spelling changes and the name does not: it is the same three syllables, said the same way, with the letter that Italian has used for this exact name for centuries.

Where it comes from

The story of Geremy

Jeremiah is one of the long prophetic books of the Hebrew Bible, and the man in it lived through the fall of Jerusalem in the sixth century before the common era. His name reached English by the ordinary route — Hebrew into Greek, Greek into Latin as Ieremias, Latin into the medieval vernacular as Jeremie — and by the thirteenth century English parents were using it without any sense of borrowing. Jeremy is therefore a genuinely old English name rather than a modern clipping of Jeremiah. Italian, meeting the same Latin, wrote it Geremia and never used a j at all, which is where this spelling has its precedent.

Meaning

the Lord will raise up

Jeremy is the English form of Jeremiah, Hebrew Yirmeyahu, built from the divine name and a verb meaning to raise up or to appoint. Both English readings — the Lord exalts, the Lord appoints — come to the same picture of someone set in place for a task.

Pronouncing Geremy

JAIR-uh-mee

Three syllables, stress on the first. The g gives no trouble to anyone reading English aloud, because the e that follows it forces the soft sound automatically.

Geremy sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1989, with 57 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Geremy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Hershal climbed just as high around 1918, and its whole arc is on record. The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It sounds identical to a name every adult already knows, so nothing has to be explained out loud.
  • The g spelling is not invented — Italian has written this prophet's name with a g since Latin gave it to them.
  • Several established short forms are available, including one that now stands alone as a name.
  • The full name has been in continuous English use since the Middle Ages, which is longer than most people assume.
What to consider
  • Every written form will come back as Jeremy, and the correction never quite ends.
  • Because the difference is invisible in speech, no one will ever know the spelling unless the child tells them.
  • Autocorrect treats the g as a typo, which turns email and school software into a small daily argument.
