The story of Geraldean
The feminine has a modern American bearer who changed what the name meant to a generation. Geraldine Ferraro was a congresswoman from Queens, a former prosecutor, when she was chosen as the running mate on a major party's national ticket — the first woman in either party to stand there. The campaign lost badly, and the coverage she received was unlike anything a candidate had faced before: reporters asked whether she could handle a crisis, whether her husband's finances were hers, whether she could bake. She answered all of it and kept going, and the next woman to stand in that position had an easier time of it because of how she had handled it.

Spear rule
Gerald joins a Germanic word for a spear to one meaning rule. Gerard joins the same spear to a word meaning hard or brave. They are two distinct names, they were both brought into England by the Normans, and scribes have been swapping them ever since — so a family's Gerald may descend from either, and the -ald and -ard endings in the records cannot be trusted to tell them apart.

Fashion outlook
Geraldean sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

- Geraldine is the familiar spelling and hers will be corrected to it.
- The name belongs strongly to one American generation.
- Gerald and Gerard have been mixed up for centuries, so the meaning comes with a caveat.
