The story of Georgios
Georgios was a plain Greek name until a soldier-martyr of that name became patron of England, Georgia, Ethiopia, Portugal and half a dozen other places, and the dragon story attached itself to him centuries later. The name spread across the whole Christian world. In Greece it remains among the most-used men's names, traditionally given to the eldest son after his grandfather, and it reaches American records with Greek families.
