Where it comes from

The story of Georgine

What is documented is a soldier executed in the eastern empire in the early fourth century and a cult around him that spread fast and far. Everything else — the dragon, the princess, the connection to any particular country — accumulated over the following millennium, and different places attached him to themselves for different reasons. England adopted him late, through the crusades, and he displaced a perfectly good local saint to do it. Georgine is the French feminine, made with the ending French uses for that job, and it reached America in the nineteenth century alongside the Latin-styled Georgia and Georgina.

Meaning

farmer

The Greek compound joins the words for earth and work. It is one of the plainest names in the Greek stock, and the dragon attached to it a thousand years later has nothing to do with it.

Fashion outlook

Georgine sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a standing name in French and German rather than an American construction.
  • Gina and Georgie are ready short forms with quite different characters.
  • The meaning is plain, concrete and easy to explain.
What to consider
  • Georgina is far commoner in English and will be written instead.
  • The stress falls at the back, which English readers may not expect.
  • It reads clearly as a name of the nineteenth century.
