Where it comes from

The story of Georgene

Six feminine forms of one name is unusual, and it happened because George was a royal name in Britain for four consecutive reigns — every family wanting to name a daughter after a king, a father or a grandfather needed a version, and every available suffix got used. Georgia borrows the Latin, Georgina the Italian, Georgette the French, and Georgene takes a lighter French ending that English also gave to Charlene, Darlene and Marlene. The result is a set of sisters that are all the same name and none of them interchangeable.

Meaning

earth-worker; farmer

Greek georgos joins ge, earth, with the root of ergon, work — the same root behind the English word energy. The derivation is not disputed. The saint who carried the name has almost no reliable biography and the dragon was added to his legend a thousand years after his death, but the name itself is a plain occupational word. The -ene ending is a French-derived feminine suffix added in English.

Georgene sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1947, with 167 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Georgene sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The Greek behind it is settled and the meaning is an ordinary, concrete job.
  • Georgie and Gene are both ready short forms and both stand alone.
  • It is rare enough that a child will not share it, unlike Georgia.
What to consider
  • Five other feminine forms of George are better known and it will be confused with all of them.
  • The stress falls at either end depending on the speaker.
  • The -ene ending places the name in the first half of the last century fairly precisely.
