There is a rule in English that a g before an e or an i is soft and a g before an a is hard, and Georganne breaks it in the middle of the word. Take the e out of George and put an a next to the second g, and the letter ought to harden into the g of gate. It does not, because the name is read as a name and not as a word.

Where it comes from

The story of Georganne

England took the saint on with the crusades. He was an eastern martyr, popular in Syria and Palestine, and English soldiers met the cult in the Levant and brought it home; by the fourteenth century a king had made him the patron of the realm and of the order of chivalry he founded, and his cross was on the banners. Before that England's patron had been an Anglo-Saxon king, and the change was a deliberate piece of political theater attaching the country to an international, crusading, thoroughly non-English figure. The given name followed much later, when a German dynasty arrived with a supply of Georges, and the women's compounds followed that.

Meaning

Farmer, plus grace

The Greek joins the word for earth to the word for work, so a georgos is somebody who works the land. Anne is from Hannah, a word about favor or grace. The compound has no meaning of its own; nobody joining the two was saying anything by it, and that is normal for names of this shape.

Fashion outlook

Georganne sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves are entirely familiar, so the name is understood the instant it is said.
  • Georgie and Annie are two ready-made everyday forms in different registers.
  • Written as one word it works as a single name and needs no hyphen.
What to consider
  • The second g invites a hard reading and will get one from people meeting the name on paper.
  • Georgeanne, Georgann and Georgianne are all in use, so the written form has to be specified.
  • Compound names of this shape are firmly dated to the middle of the last century.
