Georganna fuses two names so completely that the seam is invisible. George and Anna are both among the most-used names in Europe, and joining them produces something that reads as a single word rather than as a compound, which is unusual: most fused double names show their join. The first half means a farmer.

Where it comes from

The story of Georganna

The dragon arrived about a thousand years after the name did. The saint was a soldier martyred in the early fourth century, about whom nothing reliable is known beyond the fact of his death, and the story of the dragon and the rescued princess appears in the eleventh century at the earliest, probably picked up from older stories of the same shape and attached to a name that needed a narrative. Crusaders brought it back to western Europe, where it took hold completely; by the fourteenth century he was the patron of England and the dragon was inseparable from him. The Greek word underneath means nothing more heroic than a man who works the soil, which is the sort of thing that gets buried when a story arrives.

Meaning

farmer, and grace

The first element comes from a Greek compound joining the words for earth and work, meaning someone who works the land. The second is the Hebrew name behind Anne, meaning favor or grace. Both readings are settled. The compound has no separate sense; it is two names side by side, which is what fused double names are.

How the name formed

  1. A Greek compound meaning earth-worker
  2. A soldier martyr and, much later, a dragon
  3. Anna from a Hebrew word for favor
  4. The two fused into one name in American records

Three or four syllables depending on how quickly it is said, with the stress in the middle. The join between the two names falls inside the stressed syllable, which is exactly why the seam is inaudible.

Fashion outlook

Georganna sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves are entirely familiar and neither needs explaining.
  • Georgie and Anna are two complete names available from one certificate.
  • The fused spelling keeps the two names together on forms that would separate them.
What to consider
  • It will be written Georgiana or Georgeanna by nearly everybody who hears it.
  • Four syllables invite shortening, and the world will shorten it.
  • It is firmly of the nineteenth century in American records.
