The story of Genny
Genevieve was Paris's own saint, and what happened to her afterwards says a good deal about the city. Her shrine stood on the hill on the left bank for more than a thousand years, and in the eighteenth century a vast new church was built there to house it. The building was barely finished when the Revolution arrived, took it away from the Church, stripped it of its religious fittings and turned it into a mausoleum for the great men of the nation, which is what the Pantheon still is. The saint's relics were burned by a revolutionary committee and the ashes thrown in the river. The name survived all of it, and produced the short forms English uses now.

Tribe woman, or well born
It depends on the full name behind it. Genevieve is Gaulish and its elements are argued over, with the first usually read as a word for a people or tribe; Eugenia is Greek and means well born, from the same eu that gives eulogy and euphoria; Virginia is Latin and unrelated to either. A short form drops precisely the material that would tell you which, which is why the meaning cannot be given without asking the family.

Pronouncing Genny
JEN-ee
Two syllables with the stress at the front. The g is soft, said as a j, which is the English habit before an e; the name is therefore indistinguishable in speech from Jenny and has to be spelled every time.

Fashion outlook
Genny sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Short, warm and completely familiar in sound, so it never has to be repeated.
- The G spelling connects it to a set of long, formal names that a bearer can adopt later if she wants one.
- Gen is a clean modern one-syllable form that works in adult life.
- It is spelled with a G and said with a J, so the name will be written Jenny by nearly everyone who hears it.
- A pet form on a certificate leaves no formal version to grow into unless one is written there too.
- The full name behind it cannot be recovered from the record, so questions about meaning have no short answer.
