The story of Gary
Elbert Gary was a judge and then chairman of United States Steel, and when the company built a new works on the shore of Lake Michigan it named the town after him. A young actor born Frank Cooper was told by a casting director from Indiana that Frank was too plain; she suggested Gary, after her home town, and Gary Cooper became one of the largest stars in the world. The name had existed in tiny numbers before that and was near the top of the American lists within twenty years of his rise. It is one of the clearest examples on record of a name moving from a person to a place to a person to everybody.
