The story of Garren
Elbert Gary was the founding chairman of the United States Steel Corporation, and when the company built a new mill town on the shore of Lake Michigan in 1906 it took his surname. Two decades later a young actor from Montana named Frank Cooper needed a distinctive first name; his agent came from Gary, Indiana, and suggested it. Gary Cooper became one of the biggest film stars in the world, and the name went from almost nothing in the American records to the top twenty by the 1950s. Garren, Garret and Garrin sit in the same family, built on a Germanic word for a spear that arrived in England with the Normans, and the chain from a steel executive to a birth certificate is unusually well documented at every step.
