Where it comes from

The story of Herby

Americans say erb and the British say herb, and the American version is the older one. The word came from French, which had no h sound, and English borrowed it without one; spellings with the h were restored by scholars on Latin grounds long after the word was in use, and for centuries the letter stayed silent on both sides of the Atlantic. Over the nineteenth century British speakers began pronouncing the letter they could see — a spelling pronunciation, the same process that put the l back into falcon and the t into often — while American speech kept the inherited form. The same history explains hotel, hospital and honest, of which only the last still has a silent h everywhere.

Meaning

bright army

The name it shortens joins two Germanic elements, one meaning an army or host and one meaning bright. It was used in England before the Conquest, died out, and came back with the Normans in a French-shaped form.

HUR-bee

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The h is sounded here, unlike in the plant word, because a name is not subject to the same history.

Herby sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1929, with 18 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Herby sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape English has.
  • It is warm and immediately readable at first sight.
  • The formal name stands behind it for occasions that want one.
What to consider
  • Herbie is the commoner spelling and will be written for it.
  • It reads as a nickname even when it is the registered name.
  • It is strongly associated with a particular stretch of the last century.
