The story of Garnette
Two pieces of history sit behind this name and neither is about jewelry. The first is Constance Garnett, who translated Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Chekhov and Turgenev into English almost single-handed — seventy volumes of it — and in doing so decided what the Russian novel would sound like in English for a century. Readers argued about her choices for decades; nobody could do without them. The second is smaller and more American: the list of birthstones that everyone quotes, the one that gives garnet to January, was not handed down from antiquity. A jewelers' trade association standardized it in the early twentieth century, and it has been repeated as ancient wisdom ever since.

The red stone, or the family name that matches it
Two routes, and both are real. As a word, garnet is the gem, and the word came into English from French. As a surname, Garnett has its own history in England and traveled to America independently. The -ette at the end is a French diminutive ending that English adopted as decoration rather than as grammar, so it tells you when the name was made and nothing about which route it took.

Fashion outlook
Garnette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is a word name whose word is concrete and pleasant, which is more durable than an abstract one.
- It carries a strong vintage short form, Nettie, that is having its own quiet revival.
- The sound is crisp and easy, with no vowel anybody can get wrong.
- The -ette ending dates the spelling firmly, and Garnet without it reads as more modern today.
- It will be heard as the stone first and as a name second, which is the deal every jewel name makes.
- Garnett is also a common surname, so the name will occasionally be taken for a last name on a form.
