Where it comes from

The story of Garnetta

Medieval and early modern lapidaries did not treat stones as ornaments. They were medicine, and each had a list of properties: this one was held to stop bleeding, and soldiers wore it into battle for that reason, which is why garnets turn up in crusader inventories and in the fittings of weapons. The reasoning was of a kind that ran through European medicine for a thousand years — a stone the color of blood was understood to have authority over blood. It is easy to laugh at and it is the same logic that produced the whole doctrine of signatures, in which a plant shaped like a liver treats the liver. None of it worked. All of it was believed by intelligent people for a very long time.

The red stone

The word garnet names the gem, and the name may equally come from the English surname Garnett, which reached America independently. The ending added here is a borrowed diminutive and carries nothing of its own — it lengthens the name and tells you which decade chose it.

Fashion outlook

Garnetta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The word behind it is concrete and pleasant, which lasts better than an abstraction.
  • It carries a vintage short form that is coming back on its own.
  • It is rare while every sound in it is ordinary.
What to consider
  • Garnet and Garnette are both closer to the word and hers will be written as one of them.
  • The ending dates the name to one stretch of American use.
  • The added syllable brings no meaning with it, whatever else it brings.
