The story of Garett
Maurice FitzGerald landed in Ireland in 1169 and his descendants became two of the most powerful dynasties in the country, the earls of Kildare and of Desmond, collectively the Geraldines. Within a few generations they were patrons of Irish poetry, spoke Irish, married into Irish families and were governed by Irish law, which alarmed the English administration enough to produce the Statutes of Kilkenny in 1366 forbidding exactly that. The phrase about being more Irish than the Irish was applied to them for centuries afterwards. Their name, from Gerald, produced the Irish forms Gearalt and Gearoid, anglicized as Garrett, which is why a Germanic spear-name became a distinctly Irish surname and then an American given name.
