The story of Gardenia
Linnaeus and his circle handed out genus names as honors, and the practice left a long list of botanists hidden inside ordinary flower names. Magnolia is Pierre Magnol. Fuchsia is Leonhart Fuchs, which is also why the color is spelled with an h nobody pronounces. Dahlia is Anders Dahl, Zinnia is Johann Zinn, Begonia is Michel Begon, Bougainvillea is a French admiral, and Camellia is a Jesuit called Kamel. Garden joined that company because he was the most useful correspondent in North America: he sent specimens north and across the Atlantic for thirty years. The flower reached American gardens and then, in the early twentieth century, American birth certificates.
Meaning
the flower, named after Alexander Garden
The genus was named in the 1760s in honor of Alexander Garden, a physician and naturalist in colonial South Carolina, by the botanical establishment he corresponded with. His surname is the ordinary English one, from the word for an enclosed piece of ground, so the plant is named for a man named for a garden.

The Wenonah test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gardenia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Wenonah climbed just as high around 1916, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Wenonah's path sketches the road Gardenia is walking now.
Gardenia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A documented origin down to a named person and a decade.
- The flower is familiar, so the name needs no explanation.
- Three short forms, two of which are names in their own right.
- Four syllables is a long name and it will be shortened by other people.
- It is a flower with a very strong scent, and the association is fixed.
- It is strongly represented among older generations, which places it in time.
