Where it comes from

Our story of Gae

James Lovelock had an idea about the Earth's atmosphere regulating itself and no good name for it. His neighbor in the Wiltshire village where he lived was William Golding, who suggested Gaia, the Greek earth goddess, on a walk. The name did more for the hypothesis than any paper: it got the idea talked about far outside science, and it also earned it a great deal of hostility from biologists who read it as mysticism and objected that the planet cannot be an organism because it does not reproduce or compete. The weaker version — that life and the physical environment form a coupled system that keeps some conditions stable — is now ordinary earth-system science. The argument was largely about the word.

Meaningnot established

Not established

It respells a mid-century American name that is itself an ordinary English adjective, or possibly a clipping of a longer name. Nothing records which, and the adjective has since changed meaning completely.

Pronouncing Gae

GAY

One syllable. The final e marks the vowel as long, which is the ordinary English rule; nothing in the spelling suggests two syllables.

Gae sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1946, with 28 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Gae sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable is quick, clear and hard to mishear across a room.
  • Three letters is about as short as a name gets.
  • It pairs easily with a longer middle name.
What to consider
  • The sound is an ordinary English word whose meaning has changed completely since the name was given.
  • Gay, Gaye and Gaie will all be written for it.
  • Three letters gives a name very little to hold on to.
