The story of Gabryelle
Gabrielle Roy grew up in Manitoba and moved to Montreal, where she wrote The Tin Flute, a novel about a poor family in the working-class district of Saint-Henri during the Second World War. It was one of the first novels to show French Canadian city life plainly, and it won France's Prix Femina. Gabryelle writes the same name with a y in place of the i, a spelling that no older form uses.
