The story of Froylan
Wulfila translated the Bible into Gothic around 350, devising a script from Greek, Latin and runic letters to do it, and the surviving fragments are the earliest sustained writing in any Germanic language by a wide margin — three centuries ahead of anything in Old English. His word for Lord is frauja, and the same element is the Norse god-name Freyr, which is a title rather than a name: the lord. Visigoths ruled Spain for three centuries and left a stock of names behind, Froila among them; a ninth-century bishop of Leon carried it and became the patron of two Spanish cities, which is why it stayed in use there and nowhere else.
