The story of Faiz
Both words are old in Arabic and both spread with Islam into Persian, Turkish and Urdu. Faiz Ahmed Faiz, born in Punjab in 1911, was one of the most important Urdu poets of the century, a Communist repeatedly imprisoned by Pakistani governments and nominated for the Nobel Prize; his name is the fayḍ word. The victorious fāʾiz is used more widely across the Arab world. American records show Faiz from the 1980s with Arab and South Asian immigration and a peak in 2004, in the general pattern of a name arriving with a growing community.

Victorious; or abundance, grace
Arabic fāʾiz, from fāza, to succeed or win, means victorious or successful. Arabic fayḍ, from a root meaning to overflow, means abundance, bounty or grace, and is a distinct word. Both are transliterated Faiz or Faiz in English and both are genuine names; which a given family intended is not recoverable from the Latin spelling.

The Adis test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Faiz's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Adis climbed just as high around 1918, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Adis's path sketches the road Faiz is walking now.
Faiz sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
