A great many Welsh surnames are a fossilized ap. Ap means son of, and when Welsh families took fixed surnames the particle fused onto the front of the father's name: ap Hywel gave Powell, ap Rhys gave Price, ap Richard gave Pritchard, and ab Ieuan gave Bevan.

The story of Evon
The fusion is one of the tidiest things in British surname history and it explains a whole column of the Welsh phone book. Ap became a p and ab became a b, and both stuck to whatever followed: Probert from ap Robert, Pugh from ap Hugh, Bowen from ab Owen, Beddoe from ab Iddon. Ieuan is the Welsh form of John, and it gave Ifan, then Evan in English spelling, and ab Ieuan gave Bevan. So a Welshman named Bevan is carrying a whole phrase — son of John — with the grammar welded on. The name reached English use in the nineteenth century and the Evon spelling is a later American variant.

God is gracious
If the name is Evan respelled, it is the Welsh form of John, from Ieuan and Ifan, and behind that Hebrew Yochanan. If it is Yvon, it is the French masculine of Yves, from a Germanic word for the yew tree. Both are live and the spelling does not choose.

The Etheridge test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Evon's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Etheridge climbed just as high around 1920, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Etheridge's path sketches the road Evon is walking now.
Evon sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
