Evelina
Feminine
Evelina is Evelyn with an extra syllable and a softer landing — four beats that end on the same open vowel as Carolina and Serafina. Frances Burney gave the name to the heroine of her 1778 novel, and it has been carried in English, Swedish, Italian and Lithuanian ever since. It has never gone away entirely; it simply moves in and out of earshot.

The story of Evelina
The Normans brought Aveline to England, where it wore down over generations into Evelyn and settled as a surname before it came back the other way as a first name. Evelina is the Latin-flavored version of that same line, the ending that turns Angela into Angelina. Frances Burney's 1778 novel Evelina, or the History of a Young Lady's Entrance into the World gave it a place in English letters and a boost that carried it through the nineteenth century. It traveled independently into Sweden, Italy, Lithuania and Russia, where it has been in steady use without any English help at all.

Two readings compete: a Norman diminutive of Germanic Ava, or an extended form of Eve, "life"
The older trail runs through Norman French Aveline, a pet form of the Germanic name Ava, whose root element is not securely translated — "desired" is the usual gloss, but it is a guess of long standing rather than a settled fact. The second reading treats Evelina as a Latinate elaboration of Eve, from Hebrew Chawwah, "life". Both are serious; centuries of use have blurred them together, and most bearers have been given the name for its sound and its family resemblance to Evelyn.

Pronouncing Evelina
ev-uh-LEE-nuh
The long-E third syllable is the standard American reading. An older English pronunciation, ev-uh-LY-nuh, rhyming the ending with "Dinah," is what Burney's readers used and still turns up in Britain and in older poetry.

The trade-off
- Every part of it is already familiar in English — Eve, Evelyn, Lina — so people can spell it after hearing it once, even if they have never met one.
- Three or four short forms are in genuine everyday use, from Evie to Lina, so there is room to grow into or out of the full name.
- The same spelling works in Sweden, Italy, Lithuania and Russia, which makes it easy for family abroad to say and write.
- A documented literary record going back to the eighteenth century, and continuous use in English since.
- Two pronunciations are both legitimate: ev-uh-LEE-nuh and the older ev-uh-LY-nuh. You will be choosing one and correcting people, gently, for years.
- The Ev- family is crowded right now — Evelyn, Everly, Eva, Evangeline. Expect Evelina to be heard as Evelyn on first introduction more often than not.
- Evalina, Eveline and Evelyna are all real spellings, so forms and rosters will sometimes come back altered.
- It is rare enough that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate, which cuts both ways: no last-initial required, but also no one who already knows how it goes.
