Inaya
Feminine · “care”
Inaya comes from Arabic, from a word that turns up in everyday speech and in devotional language alike: ʿināya, care given and protection extended. It is built of open vowels — three of them, ending soft — which is why it travels easily between Arabic, Urdu, French and English mouths without being reshaped. Familiar to millions of speakers as a word long before it became a name on an American birth certificate.
How old is the name Inaya?
Inaya first appears in US birth records in 1995 — 30 years ago. The typical Inaya is a kid of about 5 — this name's wave is very recent. About 3,400 people named Inaya are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Inaya
The word ʿināya is ordinary Arabic — the care a person takes over something, the attention paid — and it is also the word used for providence in religious contexts. From Arabic it passed into Persian and Urdu, where the related form Inayat has long been in use, more often for men. As a given name for girls, Inaya spread through Arabic-speaking and South Asian Muslim families and then outward with them, which is why it is at home in both American and French records today. Its American concentration in New York, California and Texas follows the same map of arrival.
Meaning

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Inaya went to 350 girls in 2025, but Inayah, Inaaya and Inaayah are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 507, which makes it the 514th most-given girls’ name of the year — 262 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 3,170 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 4,592 for Inaya itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Alysa test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. The trade-off
- The meaning is settled and easy to state — care, protection — with no competing readings to explain.
- Works unchanged in Arabic, Urdu, French and English; it also charts in France, so it is not a name that needs translating abroad.
- Short, vowel-led and easy for young children to say and spell out loud.
- Several natural nicknames already in use — Naya, Aya, Ina — none of which need inventing.
- Two pronunciations circulate in the US, ee-NAH-yuh and ih-NAY-uh, and strangers will guess. Expect a lifetime of gentle correcting unless you are happy with either.
- Inaya, Inayah, Inaaya and Enaya all exist, so the spelling will often need giving. It also sits close to Anaya, Inara and Anya, which invites mix-ups on paperwork.
- The name arrived in American records recently and its wave is still rising, so nearly everyone carrying it here is a child. That will change as this generation grows, but for now it reads as young.
