Eulah
Feminine · “well-spoken”
The eu at the front of this name is the same one that opens eulogy, euphoria and euthanasia. It is the Greek for well or good, and the name it belongs to means well-spoken — which puts it in the small set of names that describe a skill rather than a virtue or an appearance.

The story of Eulah
The saint the name belongs to is the subject of the oldest surviving poem in French. A short piece of about thirty lines, written around the year eight hundred and eighty and preserved in a single manuscript, tells the story of her martyrdom — and it is the earliest literary text in any form of French that anybody has, predating the epic poetry by two centuries. It is written in a language visibly on its way from Latin to something else, with the grammar half gone and the vocabulary shifting, and scholars of the language have been reading it closely ever since for exactly that reason.
Meaning
well-spoken
Two Greek elements, the first meaning good or well and the second speech. The compound is transparent and the derivation is not disputed; the final h in this spelling is an English addition.

Fashion outlook
Eulah sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The meaning is unusual, specific and rather flattering.
- It is short and soft and completely easy to say.
- It connects to a very old Greek element still visible in ordinary English words.
- Eula without the h is equally standard and the spelling gets queried.
- The added letter is silent, so the effort is spent on paper alone.
- The generation that used it is now very old.
